As is our practice, we mark the start of the new academic year by sharing news of transitions in our community. Read on to find out who's coming to PWR, who's taking on new roles, and who is moving on to new adventures this year.
Who's coming
We're delighted to welcome two new colleagues to the PWR family.
Dawn Fraser is a new Senior Producer for the Stanford Storytelling Project; she comes to us from 11 years of coaching people to share first person stories on stages, with no notes, at The Moth. She is also the Founder and CEO of Fraser’s Edge, LLC, which has worked with institutions that range from Google to the Gates Foundation on the application of storytelling in business, community development and advocacy. She holds a Masters in Public Policy (MPP) from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelors of Arts (BA) from UCLA.
Some of you might know our new PWR lecturer, Stephanie Reist, who is joining us from downstairs in COLLEGE, where she served as a lecturing fellow for two years. Prior to coming to Stanford, she completed a PhD in Latin American Cultural Studies and an MPP at Duke University and served as a post-doctoral researcher in Education at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. She has written for outlets like The Baffler and Jacobin and co-directed a short documentary on access to higher education in Brazil called "The Cost of Opportunity." This year, she'll be teaching PWR 1SR, "The Rhetorics of Meritocracy and Deservedness in an Unequal Society."
Who's returning
We're excited that several of our newer colleagues will be returning to teach with us this fall: Liz Hille, Jill Schepmann, Julia Schulte, Olesya Shayduk-Immerman, Lynn Sokei, and Peter Tokofsky.
Who's taking on a new role
As we announced last spring, the following people have been promoted to the rank of Advanced Lecturer in PWR, effective September 1: Jennifer Johnson, Valerie Kinsey, Tesla Schaeffer, and Lisa Swan. Congratulations again!
In addition, we're happy to welcome Valerie Kinsey to the role of PWR 2 Course Coordinator. Valerie takes over from Jennifer Johnson, who just finished up her term as coordinator. Many thanks to JJ who helped us all navigate the ups and downs of teaching PWR 2 during pandemic times, which was certainly not an easy task.
Who's moving on
As happens every year, some of our colleagues have moved on to new positions. We wish good luck and happy adventures to our colleagues Bob Bathrick, Christian Nagler, Matthew Redmond, and Emily Southerton who helped us during the surge of undergraduates, and to Brittany Hull and Selby Schwartz for their contributions during their years as career-track lecturers.
